Book Review: Eyes Wide Open by Judd Wilhite

41Z8gRuhSRL._SL500_AA240_There is a struggle for many Christians, I really believe it’s more common that we want to admit – we are not living our lives as the real person God wants us to be.

I’ve been a Christian for a while now and this book was a reminder for me to make sure I am living as the real me. Living life with my ‘eyes wide open’, seeing God in the right way and the difference that will make to how I see myself and how I see others too.

For me the theme of the book was captured right at the start…‘Distorted images are not only shaping your perspective but also hindering your possibilities’ Maybe acknowledging that we do this is the beginning of the journey. Then there is the opportunity to travel through the rest of the dialogue and open our eyes to God, to our true Identity, to Change and then to Influence. After all, once you recognise who God is and what He has done for you – your changed life can influence in amazing ways.

So many thoughts jumped out a me. Here’s a few…
…God is into forgiveness – not payback
…God is not holding our mistakes over us & trying to punish us. He loves to forgive & empower
…boredom emerges when you are not using your gifts – apathy starts with self-comfort
…dropping masks requires authenticity; facing secrets requires confession
…we were created in love, with love and by love
…love motivates us to engage our culture and seek to restore it

I acknowledge that I have not lived with my eyes wide open all the time. Sometimes it’s easier to keep them closed – in an ‘ignorance is bliss’ kind of fashion. But in all honesty, that ’s not good enough. God needs me to live out my true identity in Christ, that changes culture, that challenges people and loves and forgives as He loves and forgives me.

This is a great, easy read suitable for all Christians. Insight, teaching & wisdom for the mature & younger Christian alike. Get your copy here.

Are You Ready For Lift Off?

slide.001

Gearing up for what promises to be a GIANT month at Xcel Darlington. Time to turn the heat up and go for growth. Time to help someone move one step closer towards God.

Are you ready for lift off?
Are you ready to get involved?
Are you ready to bring someone along?

Our promise is simple – we will be ready. To welcome everyone. To open the dialogue. To answer their questions. To introduce people to the one person who can navigate them through life’s trials and joys.

For 30 days let’s STRETCH ourselves again. It’s been a while for some of us. Here’s some suggestions…

PRAY every day for breakthrough. For family. For friends. To see change in your town. To see people come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. To take someone one step closer.

FAST. Once a week. Sometimes things only change through prayer & fasting!! It won’t kill you. It is sacrificial and actually good for you!

READ. Everyone reading the Gospel of Matthew. Put your thoughts down on the blog every day!! What is God revealing to you!

Get INVOLVED…some ideas brewing, to watch out for or that are already happening…
…new Darlington Outreach feeding the homeless.
…new SG launched at the Dolphin Centre (well re-launched)
…new Christians class every Sunday morning – just in June
…the GIANT JUNE challenge??
…Chris Denham from Hope City Leeds preaching
…new series…Battle of the Sexes
…PY in Darlington – come hear the news
…new opportunities to serve
…prayer meeting in Darlo
…the BIG SOCIAL
…a Welcome to Church party
…ands that not counting all the incredible things that you can do right where you are at!!

No excuses. Get ready, get ready, get ready!! Xcel Church is where it’s at! The region will not know what is hitting it!! And this is not about making you busier in an already hectic life. It’s about providing you with options and ways to connect people in to your world.

If nothing else…it’s going to make the journey fun!!

Does Every Pastor Feel Like This…Sometimes?

I haven’t been a Pastor very long. It will be one year in March. Really enjoying the journey though, doing my best to become all that God would want me to be. The people, the vision, the challenge, the determination, the prayer, the study, the believing God for change, growth, to make a difference in Darlington.

Despite my early days I think I could empathise with Moses as I read Numbers 11:11-15 and wondered does every Pastor feel like this sometimes? Frustrated with ‘the people’ that you have given by God, overwhelmed by the burden, of carrying the vision, of carrying and leading them, the disappointment that they don’t always seem to understand what is going on?

I think that God just heard the cry from the heart of a man who wanted to do his best. I think God never intended for Moses to carry it alone and was always ready and willing to bring others on board to help with carrying the load. It needs to be the same with us as Pastors…would you agree?

Book Review: Turning Points by Dino Rizzo

imagesFor a small book – only just over 100 pages, it packs a BIG punch. Picked it up at Xcel Conference at ALC Bradford where the author, Pastor Dino Rizzo was speaking. Loved his way of thinking and was intrigued enough to buy the book.

By looking at what could be described as crisis moments in people’s worlds, he gets you imagining what their personal turning point must have been like. The encounter with Jesus, the emotion of it, the risk perhaps, the excitement, the step of faith, the difference it made.

Right at the end he says this ‘Sometimes a turning point is just for us….Sometimes a turning point is for us and our household….Sometimes a turning point is for our entire community….Sometimes a turning point is for generations to come’. Above all ‘turning points are opportunities for God to draw us closer to Him.’

Challenged me to think about the turning points in my life. Might even use the thought as a preaching theme. Hope that ok.

Highly recommended. Get your copy here.

5 Ways to Gain Momentum [3]

Hope you are getting something from these posts. Gaining momentum is a tough challenge. Here are my final thoughts which could help…

4. Stick to it.
Sticking at something is not easy. It is however the difference maker. They say that doing one thing for 21 days makes it a habit. I don’t know how true that is but if you want it become a part of your lifestyle you must stick to it. Don’t let it drift. Don’t let the time get stolen by other stuff. For it to move from being a good intention to a value it must stick.

It means not letting failing now and then stop you.
It means not allowing other more trivial things deflect you from the path you wish to travel.
It means making adjustments along the way, not waiting until its too late.

5. Become accountable to someone.
To gain momentum having someone to whom you are accountable is extremely important. Most people do not make it on their. John Maxwell says that one is too smaller a number to achieve greatness.

Behind every ‘overnight’ success is a team of people keeping them on track.

You need someone in you world who can ask more than ‘how’s it going?’ They need to be able to tell when you are wrong, challenge your actions, as well as help you when you are struggling, pick you up when you fall.

Even Solomon understand that 2 are better than 1. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves”. [Eccl 4:9-12]

To gain momentum: get an accountability point in your world.

What do you think?

5 Ways to Gain Momentum [2]

3. Prepare beforehand.
‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’.

This is a truth that so many people dismiss. After all, you probably plan your holiday, so why not the rest of your life. Which is the more important?

Take that one thing and plan your success of it. Too many people think that just having an idea is enough. You will not achieve different results by continuing with the same actions. You must plan a different course. Preparation is a vital key to success that must not be overlooked.

For example, if the one thing is spending time with God in prayer then decide when. Plan it. If it’s going to be early, then plan…set the alarm, go to bed earlier.

The inevitable fact is that to gain momentum in anything new there will be the need to put down something else.

Vision Night @ Xcel

Did a little session tonight on becoming an agent of change, using the book by Steve Chalke. It’s an easy read, bitesize chunks which can help anyone understand what it takes to make things happen and a real insight into being a leader.

Here are the 10 I chose from the book with my thoughts…

LESSON 1: RESPOND, don’t react
Have the confidence to wait, rather than jumping into the fray with guns blazing, then speak graciously – this is the hallmark of maturity

‘Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret’

LESSON 2: PEOPLE matter more than PROGRAMMES
The volunteer/team leader relationship is a very precious one – there are pressures on both sides to be understood. ‘Volunteers are not changed by moral exhortation but by transformed imagination’

Appreciate them. Love on them. Treat them. Celebrate with them. Encourage them.

LESSON 3: Under PROMISE, over DELIVER
Leaders – you may have BIG dreams – just be careful where you share them – some people can speak a good game but just don’t match the hype.

It’s what we do that counts – not what we say we’ll do.

LESSON 4: VISION and FRUSTRATION are the same thing
Big vision is great – but big vision is also frustrating. Vision is longing for what is not yet; frustration is the inevitable result of longing for what is not yet.

LESSON 5: Approach every PROBLEM with an OPEN MIND rather than an OPEN MOUTH
Your words can be a comfort or they can be like weapons. Your words add value or subtract. They either lift someone up or pull them down.

Next time faced with a problem…pause, wait, think before you speak…
‘Who needs to know’ ‘Should I really say this’ ‘How could I best respond’

LESSON 6: TRUST evolves, it is never a simple ‘On’ or ‘Off’ affair
Your team members don’t need to like you, they need to trust you. If you want people to journey with you then they need to be able to trust you.

Trust evolves. It takes time to build it. It is not a one-off event. It’s a process.

LESSON 7: PRAISE is the miracle tool
Why do we find it easier to find fault than to give genuine praise?
Praise makes others feel good about themselves and want to achieve more.

LESSON 8: Keep the MAIN THING, the MAIN THING
To live life on purpose demands that you keep the main thing, the main thing

What are the main things? Prayer – Reading the Word – Worship
Distractions = comfortable – laziness – complacent – the fluffy stuff

Making the choice to be a Christian is one thing. Living out the daily disciplines of that choice is another challenge altogether

LESSON 9: Nothing is so SIMPLE that it cannot be MISUNDERSTOOD
You need to become secure in who you are and the role you are in.

John 13 tells the story of Jesus washing the disciples feet – the only reason he could do this was he knew who he was and where he was going. He has an internal sense of security. How about you?

LESSON 10: If it ain’t BROKE, BREAK it
Change agents are driven and creative. They can’t stop questioning the way things are. Change agents are hard to live with – they keep breaking stuff, even when you don’t think it needs to be broken.

What needs breaking in your life to move you forward – as a leader, volunteer, in life?

If you were there – what did you think?

Run For The Door

Read some thoughts over on Church Marketing Sucks by Bob Lotich talking about what makes someone runs for the door. These are my comments, you can read his by clicking on the link above.

Everything was mediocre.
That’s almost what people expect so we cannot let it happen. The Church & Mediocre – are they in partnership or what? Church should be excellent. Not perfect – but we should be doing the best we can with what we have.

If the people are embarrassed about bringing someone then you have slipped into mediocrity!

The place was full of strife.
We are in the world not of the world. Problem for some Churches which Kong Hee touched on last week at Stronger was that all the stuff that Christians say they should not ‘touch’ is in the Church already.

Back-biting, selfish-ambition, gossip and worse in some peoples lives – watch them on TV but don’t live them out. 2nd reason people don’t come to church is hypocrisy and strife amongst the Christians just confirms it.

There was an unwillingness to adapt.
The christian journey is all about change. If you are not willing to change then you are in the wrong place. I understand that we need different types of church for different types of people but that doesn’t mean we should compromise on staying relevant.

The message never changes.
How we present the message needs to change all the time to help us reach everyone.

They tickled the ears of the congregation.
I want Church to be fun. I also want Church to challenge people. To stir some kind of response. Xcel Darlington is not a social club! It is a life transforming, life equipping, God-filled environment. We are trying to create an environment of growth. If you refuse to grow then you are in the way probably and stopping others from growing themselves.

‘We put on a show’ every week. We want people to see Jesus at His very best. It’s not just entertainment though. It’s not fake. It’s a demonstration of what Jesus has done in people’s lives.

It is not led with passion.
Passion is so important. If you are not convinced as the leader then no one else will be either. People want to follow a leader who believes in what they are saying.

Christians should be the most passionate people around. Jesus said that he had come to give us life in all it’s fullness. Not a damp squib, full of lifeless wet handshakes. We are people full of passion, full of purpose. Confident because the same power that conquered the grave lives in us too.

My promise… (and other Pastors too)
Xcel Church across all the venues will work hard so that people don’t want to run for the door.

I hope that when you come you discover that there are people passionate about loving God, ready to do whatever it takes to change their worlds, not afraid to share their stories and vulnerabilities with others and not just coming to Church for entertainment but to challenged in living their journey for God the best they can. It’s not perfect and Xcel Church won’t be for everyone but it’s definitely Church like you didn’t know existed.

Vision + Culture

Creating the right culture is an essential part of bringing about the vision you see. I desire that everyone feels comfortable being part of Xcel Church Darlington – whatever their background, lifestyle or habits. We all came from somewhere, we just might be further on the journey than others when it comes to knowing Christ and living out our salvation.

These thoughts from the book No Perfect People Allowed by John Burke might help…
‘Our responsibility is not to make people grow or change. Our task is to create the right soil, a rich healthy environment, in which people can grow up in faith until the invisible God is made visible through His Body, the Church’

‘God is responsible for the growth, for changed hearts, but the soil is the responsibility of the the leaders and Christ-followers who make up that Church.’

These are great reminders that an ultra-modern, all-flashing, relevant vision is not enough. I must make sure that culture is right too. What is the soil like that I am asking people to get planted in? Is it only me that understands that or do the Church get the culture too?

Who Is Listening?

Seth Godin put a great post on his blog recently asking the simple question: are they ready to listen?

He states that ‘Most people, most of the time, steadfastly refuse to pay attention’.

As a Pastor/Leader I have to pay attention to stuff like this. I am in the business of marketing the greatest message. The methods might change but the message stays the same. How can I make sure people are ready? Every week over 500 people come to the various venues of Xcel Church so it becomes a very valid question to ask: are they ready to listen?

These are my own thoughts here but I imagine Church is made up of a variety of different types of people…

…those who come, listen, grasp a hold of everything, eat, live & breathe God and have a real desire to make a difference
…those who come, listen to the stuff they like but miss out on the rest
…those who come, attenders only
…those who come, don’t really listen but want to be listened to

Perhaps the challenge for me as a leader is to make sure that what I am saying is worth listening to, making sure that I am talking about Gods view (not my view) on stuff that everyone else is talking about and would therefore be more willing to listen.

Share your thoughts: what are the issues you think Church should be talking about?
