God Wants To Do the BIG Things

Encouraged this week in my praying and reading that God really does want to do something BIG.

In my life.
In my family.
In my Church.

If God desires that for me then He desires it for YOU as well. God really is FOR US.

Paul wrote to the Thessalonians that he was praying for them ‘that by his [God's] power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by faith’. [2 Thessalonians 1:11]

So we are back to the need to make space for God to move. To act in FAITH. Without faith it’s impossible to please God. Without any acts prompted by faith God cannot fulfill anything. This is not acts prompted by my own desires but by faith. Challenges the heart: selfish desires v faith filled desires.

Selfish desires make me look good.
Faith filled desires make God look good.

God wants to fulfill every good purpose of mine to make Him look good. To bring glory to His name. To promote Him, not to promote me.

What act prompted by faith do you want to see God fulfill?

Make Space for What God Can Do

Was reminded this morning that God needs us to make space for him to move. Isaiah 54:2 tells us to ‘enlarge, to stretch, to not hold back, to lengthen and to strengthen’. Believing God for BIG things usually involves all these.

The key is to LENGTHEN the cords and then STRENGTHEN your stakes.

Both elements are important.
If you do not strengthen then you might snap.
You were designed to lengthen, to increase your capacity in God but not without learning how to strengthen that growth. Establish it, make it good, make it long lasting not just for a moment.

Book Review: How Good is Good Enough by Andy Stanley

51uXnmdqVNL._SL75_ Part of my October reads…

Good people go to heaven…at least that’s what some people say. But how good is good enough? Who decides what good is? What measure should we use? What is good to me may not be good to you? Some think blowing people up is good but I’m not sure I would agree with that.

The argument is presented excellently by Andy Stanley. I would expect nothing less. For anyone in your world who thinks like this I reckon this little book would be a great read. It would not offend them but it would certainly make them think about their own way of thinking. The alternative of the Gospel of Jesus looks great in comparison because ‘good enough’ doesn’t even come into the equation.

Buy a copy, read it and tell me what you think.

Believing BIG: Day 2

Here’s a thought:

If you are not believing God for something that you cannot physically do yourself then you are in danger of coasting in your Christian walk.

Always be believing for something.
Make it something BIG.
Something that will display God at His very best and give Him the glory.
That provides the opportunity to stand and say ‘It wasn’t me – it was God’

How do you pray BIG?
Take some time out to know what God wants you to pray for.
Don’t just pick anything – be specific.
Pray to see salvation in another persons life.
Pray to see growth in Xcel Church.
Pray for a breakthrough.
Ask but remember – play your part, do what you can & let God do what He can.

So…what are you praying for right now?

Believing for the BIG

This month I am focused on believing for the BIG.

Change – breakthrough – growth – increase – salvations

I know what I want to see – what about you?
What are you believing God for right now?
What’s the stretch for you?
Where are you creating space to allow God to do something?

Encourage you to join in. The next 30 days – pray, read, believe. Share your thoughts. Let’s pray & believe together, encourage one other and see God do some incredible things.

Things to Help Keep you in Step With the Spirit

Continuing with some previous thoughts.

Remember that when you became a Christian: YOU CHANGED. Something happened. Your spirit came alive to the things of God. Easy really. Or maybe that was just the choice. The daily management of that choice is where the battle lays. Being lead by your flesh or being led by the spirit.

Paul wrote in Galatians 5:25 ‘keep in step with the spirit’. Maybe its like the spirit that is alive in you is calling you forward into the things of God but the flesh is holding you back. Sometimes I feel like I’m playing catch up with what God has for me.

What can I do to make sure I keep in step with the spirit? To tip into the things of God?

Remember whose KINGDOM you are in
We know we are part of God’s kingdom. We have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. A transfer price paid through Jesus.

Why do live some days as if we have forgotten this?
Why do we try & fit God into our kingdoms instead of remembering that we are in His?

Knowing whose Kingdom you are in creates confidence. It brings assurance. It’s why David could stand in front of Goliath and tell him that he was ‘going down’.

Let go off ME
Read this ‘I cannot embrace the Kingdom of God if my arms of full of ME’.

We want all that God has for us but we are too consumed with getting everything we want. You can’t have both. We cannot pursue our dreams and God’s dreams at the same time.

Letting go of ME makes space for God to move. It’s scary. It’s not easy. But a rush. What an adventure.

REPENT
This is the tough one.

We repent. We turn away from our old life.
We get on with life.
We then turn round and go back to the old life. [Or is that just me]

Maybe repentance is a one-off. I would like to suggest that we need to repent more often.

We need to repent…
…of our lack of desire
…of turning back
…of allowing ‘others’ to cut in on us while we run the race
…of thinking the pursuit of our dreams & Jesus can live in harmony when that’s impossible
…for saying we seek first the kingdom of God as in Matthew 6:33 but then not fully trusting God to fulfill it

Keep in step with the spirit…
…remember whose Kingdom you are in
…let go of ME
…Repent

Let’s see what difference it might make.

Emergency Change Required

[Beware reading this post: this is one of those posts that may seriously confront you. It did me and I wrote it].

Every day we all do things.
We live life, make decisions, interact with people, use our time, complete tasks, think, chill, the list is endless.

What have you done today?

Everything you do leaves a mark.
It makes a difference. Even though you may not see it physically – every action creates a reaction. Your being somewhere, doing something, meeting someone, not meeting someone, your readiness to take a hold of opportunities or ignore them or just not even see them – they ALL leave a mark.

The apostle Paul said it like this ‘For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.’ What’s your smell like? How do people remember you?

Influence is an incredibly subtle thing.
We do it all the time without realising.
The danger with that is it may not always be the influence we imagine ourselves having.

Pastor John recently spoke about ‘repainting the landscape of Christianity in the region’. Incredible way to illustrate the potential we have. The INFLUENCE we can have as Xcel Church. Everything we do then is a part of that painting. Both as a Church but also as an individual. Our potential influence is wrapped up inside EVERYTHING we do.

Everyday you paint a picture of who you are…
Your actions.
Your lack of actions.
Your reactions.
Your words.
Your lifestyle choices.

Each one describes you. Each one shows who you really are to the world around you. Each one shows what is important to you and how you are living life at any given moment. And every day many of us tell the world and in so doing, lose our right to influence to our full potential.

How…well, forget the normal people interactions you have and just checkout your FACEBOOK & TWITTER profiles. We paint a picture that we would never have painted years ago. Full of mixed messages, negativity, lifestyle habits, choices, just plain weird stuff. They all paint a picture of you and it’s not always a great picture.

To be influential you have to be deliberate. You have to think about what you are doing and the impact that it could have. I want to do great things for God and I’m sure you do to but if we cannot manage our own lives well, why do we think God should entrust others to us as well. This is dangerous stuff to write but we are being challenged now to RISE TO THE OCCASION.

‘Everything is permissible but not everything is good for me’ [1 Cor 6:12]. It might be legal but how does it make you look? How does it make God look? What difference might it make to someone who then comes into church and sees you?

Where do you need an emergency change?
Where do you need a lifestyle x-ray to take place?
Where do you need to build some consistency into your life to increase your potenial to INFLUENCE people and be the ‘life-giving’ fragrance of God in their lives?

Interesting. Don’t hesitate.

Tipping in to the things of God

I am challenged.
I have a deep desire to make sure I am always tipping in to the things of God.
I know I AM changed. When I became a Christian I was changed. I was dead in my sins. Then I was made alive to the things of God. All because of what Jesus did for me.

The BIG THOUGHT I had was this…my Spirit has changed, is alive to God but maybe the rest of me needs to catch up. I either keep in step with the Spirit or I drift the wrong way. It’s easy to drift!

I have an ‘obligation’ to live according to the Spirit. Not according to the flesh. Romans 8 tells me that. Sinful nature is death. The spirit is life. Jesus is worth that much. I am indebted to him for everything he has done for me…right?

So I keep tipping into the things of God…
…in my THINKING
…staying FILLED with the FULLNESS of God
…in my FOCUS

I don’t want to just labour at somethings that is important from an earthly perspective but misses the mark when it comes to eternity. Christianity is my calling. So I ‘ought to labour after & pray earnestly for clearer insight into & and a fuller acquaintance with the great objects of a Christians hope’

My personal challenge: to be honest enough to look at my life and answer the question – am I truly dwelling with Christ? Am I tipping into the things of God?

How is your Influence?

When was the last time you reflected on your influence?

Who influences you?
Who do you influence?

John Maxwell says that leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less. Without it you are not a leader. The disappointing factor is that many would-be leaders forget this.

You will be influencing.
Whether it is the right kind of influence is what you need to assess. Influence MUST be intentional. Ask yourself…who can you influence today? In what way will you influence someone to make it worthwhile?

Your ability to influence is essential to your success.

1. Think about who your are influencing
2. Look around at those who are in your crowd
3. Decide who you could invest in & be intentional about how you will influence them
4. Go for it

No More Drift

Drift.

Easily done. You know, how you get ‘out of the habit’ of doing something. It’s not even a conscious thing, it just happens. Thankfully now I recognise it more quickly, and act on that recognition more quickly too. I guess that’s the key.

Most people know they need to change something.
Unfortunately, most people don’t ACT on the need to change something.

Getting ‘back on track’ is not as easy as drifting. Maybe drifting is default mode while staying on the right track is by design. Design occurs by choice, not by chance. So, today was a drift stopping day!! Alarm set, up and into some time with God.

Days always feel better for me when I have started it right. Don’t know what that is for you. Starting right for me is with God…a few verses, some worship, shake off the rubbish, get in the position that I should be in, call on God, pour out my heart, confess, pray into the day, the family, situations, dreams, vision, for others [not necessarily in that order] but I think you catch what I’m saying.

Jesus said ’seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well’. The things are the stuff of life, God knows that you need them. Aware that I wasn’t doing that enough recently.

How to stop the drift in your life…
1. Choose to [don't wait, just choose]
2. Design it [for me, to get up early means going to bed earlier]
3. Respond to it [get up, do the thing you need to do]
4. Continue in it [one day does not stop drift]
5. Enjoy the blessing of doing it [not out of duty but from a place of devotion to your God]

What do you need to do to stop the drift?
